This organization was founded in 2004, with ideas of the association conceived by the class of 2006. It began as a collection of Africans who wanted to organize and present information about their various cultures to their peers and the college personnel. The goal was to promote African cultures and traditions by simply "telling our own tale". The objective was to share our heritage (music, food, fashion, etc.) with our peers as we strived to educate them about a continent that has been so long, ill-portrayed. Additionally, a united front was formed to address concerns peculiar to Africans at the college and teach the members the importance of giving back to the college & university, that has educated a respectable amount of African professionals in the United States. With the help of some faculty, Dr. Mo Enigbokan & Dr. M. Akpaffiong, and those in the 2006 class, Dr. Austin Amos-Nwankwo and Dr. Kenneth Emelonye, this organization was birthed, as Dr. Prince Egesi served as the first president in 2005. The native magazine, The Lozenge, was created to serve as a platform from which the students could voice their opinions about pharmacy educational practices and through which we could highlight food recipes, arts, and cultural traditions of various African countries. Over the years, the organization has grown to become one of the largest alumni network in the college of pharmacy. This year, 2018, celebrates the 12th year anniversary since its publication in June 2006. |
